With a variety
of soil types on-site, Pelham provides the perfect environment for the teaching
of rocks and soils outdoors. Using samples collected on and off site, pupils
are challenged to identify local and non-local rocks and minerals and can
also try their hand at soil sieving, leading to the classification of particle
sizes.
Using soil
augers and trowels, samples of soil are collected on-site for examination
at Pelham, or for further work at school. The samples can be used to determine
the texture of the different soil types and then finally for soil painting!
The geological
sundial can also be used to identify different rocks and minerals with the
use of worksheets which also incorporate the use of the sundial and compass.
